Eagles Take Series Win in Friday Split With Hornets

WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. (3/14/25) – The Williams Baptist University baseball team earned a series win after a doubleheader split with Harris-Stowe on Friday by the final scores of 3-2 and 6-5 from Shell Field on Friday afternoon.

Jacob Watkins continued to excel at the plate as he put the Eagles up 1-0 in the bottom of the third on an RBI single.  A sacrifice fly from Nicholas Jones later in the frame put Williams up a pair.

The Hornets cashed in a run on a bases-loaded walk to cut the deficit in half in the top of the fourth, but WBU responded with an RBI single off the bat of Gavin Mink in the home half of the inning to push the advantage back to two.

Harris-Stowe plated their second run of the game and threatened for more in the top of the fifth, but Cooper Thomas induced two pop flies to work out of trouble and keep the Eagles ahead.

Jolby Jones came on for the save in the seventh inning, sitting down the Hornets in order to secure the 3-2 victory and the series win.  With his fifth career save, Jones tied the WBU record for saves in a career.

WBU jumped ahead again in game two, this time on an RBI single by Lawson Aaron in the top of the first.  The Hornets responded with two runs in the second to go ahead 2-1.

JD Burton tied the game at two after scoring on a groundout in the second, then Aaron struck again to put Williams ahead 3-2 on an RBI single.  Connor Brinkley crushed a double to right to extend the Eagles lead to 5-2.

The Hornets cut the lead to 5-3 in the fifth, then plated three on an RBI double from Jeremy Kelly to go ahead 6-5 in the sixth.  WBU threatened in the sixth, but stranded the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position.

The Hornets sat down the final three Eagles hitters to take the 6-5 victory and avoid the four-game sweep.

The split moves WBU to 15-9 overall and 8-8 in American Midwest Conference play.  Next, the Eagles will travel to Hannibal, Mo. to face Hannibal-LaGrange in a four-game set on Mar. 20-21.  First pitch of game one against the Trojans is set for noon on Thursday.
