WBU’s Men’s Soccer Team Drops Match to Bethel

The Williams Baptist University men's soccer team lost to Bethel University 2-0 in a non-conference matchup at the WBU Soccer Field Tuesday afternoon.

The Eagles and Wildcats matched each other step-for-step through much of the first half, but Bethel broke through in the 38th minute when Gregory Cousins collected a loose ball in front of the net and was able to put it past WBU goalkeeper Rodrigo Pina, who was unable to collect the initial shot for the first goal of the match.

The Eagles continued to force the issue on Bethel, as the Wildcats committed 12 fouls in the game against WBU offensive attack. Jacobo Obradors had a chance to tie the game in the 40th minute with a solid chance, but the attempt sailed high of the net.

Bethel added a second goal in the 58th minute when Luka Mrvic buried a shot home to push the advantage to 2-0.

The Eagles had a chance to cut into the deficit in the 79th minute when they were awarded a penalty kick after a handball in the box, but the attempt from Obradors was stopped by Bethel goalkeeper Norberto Lima Vieira and it would be the last offensive attack for the Eagles.

Obradors led Williams with four shots, two of which were on goal, while Pina had five saves.

WBU returns to action Thursday, Sept. 21 against Freed-Hardeman. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. at the WBU Soccer Field.

WBU is a private, Christian university in Walnut Ridge.
