Eagles Remain Undefeated in Conference Play With Win Over #21 Missouri Baptist

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (10/18/23)  – The Williams Baptist University Men's Soccer team defeated #21 Missouri Baptist 2-1 on the road on Wednesday night.

The Eagles and Spartans both came into this match undefeated in conference play, looking for at least a share of the top spot in the AMC table.

The Eagles would come out of the gate hot with Alfonso Madrigal scoring an unassisted goal from deep outside the box in only the 7th minute of the match.  Joao Baretto would find the net for the Eagles second tally of the night in the 21st minute to put the Eagles up 2-0 early.

Missouri Baptist would strike back with a goal of their own from Serjic Misic in the 22nd minute.  The game would be a defensive battle from there as no more goals would be scored for the rest of the night.

MBU had a great chance to tie the match in the 85th minute as the Spartans would be fouled in the box and have the chance of a penalty kick.  Dominic Smith took the shot for the Spartans, but it was saved by Eagles keeper Rodrigo Pina, and the rebound shot knocked off the crossbar and was cleared out by the Eagles defense.  The Eagles would hold on in the waning minutes of the match to hand Missouri Baptist its first loss in conference play.

Rodrigo Pina played all 90 minutes of the match for the Eagles, securing four saves on the night.  WBU outshot Missouri Baptist 14-12, with eight shots on goal.

With the win, the Eagles move to 3-0-1 in conference play and sit in a three-way tie for first place in the American Midwest Conference with Columbia (MO) and Missouri Baptist.

Next, the Eagles will take on William Woods University at home at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21.
