Eagles Win Second Consecutive Regular Season Championship With Win Over Trojans

HANNIBAL, Mo. (10/28/23)  – The WBU Men's Soccer team clinched back-to-back American Midwest Conference regular season championships Saturday afternoon after a 5-1 road win over Hannibal-LaGrange University.

The Trojans got the scoring started in the 13th minute when Linus Saewe (Nicolas Godoy) found the back of the net to give HLGU a 1-0 lead.

The Eagles would answer three minutes later when Hugo Gil assisted Alfonso Madrigal in the 16th to tie the game back up at one.

Both sides would go scoreless until Fernando Paya scored in the 44th minute thanks to Hugo Gil's second assist of the match to give WBU its first lead of the day.

The Eagles would pour it on in the second half to secure the game and the regular season championship.  Hugo Gil found his third assist in helping Fernando Paya score his second goal of the match in the 53rd minute to make the score 3-1.  Joao Baretto put another tally on the board with an assist from Emmanuel Devolder in the 59th minute.

Not to be outdone, Jacobo Obradors added the fifth goal of the match in the 74th minute to secure the win for the Eagles.  

The Eagles outshot the Trojans 24-7 with 12 shots on goal.

Rodrigo Pina recorded four saves in 90 minutes in goal for WBU.

The Eagles will await to find out their opponent and the date of the opening round of the AMC tournament in the coming days.
