OAKLAND CITY, Ind. (9/14/24) – The Williams Baptist University volleyball team split its two matches in the Oakland City tri-match on Saturday, with a 3-2 win over Alice Lloyd (Ky.) and a 3-1 loss to Oakland City.
Three Lady Eagles tied for the team-lead in kills with 12 in the win over Alice Lloyd. Jayla Weddington, Tinleigh Ruhman, and Meadow Jones all got into double digits in kills in the matchup.
Jaycie Cook took the team-lead in assists with 45 on the day, and Riley Henson led with 35 digs.
WBU scored the first three points of the match on two kills from Jayla Weddington, but Alice Lloyd fought back to take a 12-9 lead. Though the Eagles fought back, an 8-2 run from ALC cemented a set one loss.
Williams returned the favor in the second set, with an early 6-1 run pushing the advantage to 17-10. An attack error on ALC tied the match at 1-1 with a 25-18 Eagle set win.
After a tough third set, the Eagles got out to a rough start as Alice Lloyd took a 21-17 lead. WBU fought back late in the set, and an 8-2 Williams run, capped off by an Alonna Thomas service ace, won the fourth set 25-23 and sent the match to the fifth and final set.
The Eagles maintained the momentum from the fourth set comeback to take the fifth set 15-10, with the final exclamation point coming from a Tinleigh Ruhman kill.
Meadow Jones took the team lead in kills in the second match of the day against Oakland City with 14 on 32 attempts (.375). Jaycie Cook paced the squad in both assists and digs with 29 and 16, respectively.
After stumbling in the first two sets 25-12 and 25-13, WBU fought back in the third with a 9-3 run in the middle of the set to put the Eagles up 17-11. An Oakland City attack error gave WBU the win in the third set 25-22 to bring the match score to 2-1.
Despite the momentum swing, a 9-2 Oakland City run at the beginning of the fourth set quelled any comeback hopes for WBU, as the Mighty Oaks took the set 25-15 and the match 3-1.
The Lady Eagles will open the season at home in their next match against Champion Christian on Tuesday, Sept. 17. The match is slated to start at 6 p.m. in the Southerland-Mabee Center.
