Bio
John Mayberry was hired as the Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Williams Baptist at the beginning of the 2017-18 season.
In 2025-26, WBU made its third consecutive trip to the NAIA Tournament after a runner-up finish in the AMC Tournament. The Lady Eagles had an NAIA Third Team All-American, the AMC Player of the Year, AMC Newcomer of the Year, five AMC All-Conference players, three All-Defensive Teamers, and 16 AMC Academic All-Conference players.
In 2024-25, Mayberry led the Lady Eagles to their first American Midwest Conference title behind a 28-5 overall record and 21-1 mark in the AMC. The Lady Eagles earned their second consecutive bid to the NAIA Tournament and won a game in the tournament for the first time in program history. Mayberry was named AMC Coach of the Year for his efforts. WBU boasted an NAIA Second Team All-American, the AMC Player of the Year, AMC co-Sixth Woman of the Year, had five AMC All-Conference Players, two AMC All-Defensive Teamers, and 15 AMC Academic All-Conference players.
In 2023-24, Mayberry coached WBU to a 24-7 overall record and a 15-3 record in conference play, tied for the most conference wins in a season in school history. The Eagles took a trip to the AMC title game and made the program’s first appearance in the NAIA National Tournament. Two Eagles were named to the AMC All-Conference First Team, one to the Second Team, and one Honorable Mention. Six Lady Eagles were placed on the AMC Academic All-Conference list as well. Coach Mayberry collected his 100th win of his career in the season opener against University of the Ozarks.
In 2022-23, Mayberry led the Eagles to a 19-11 overall record with a 14-6 mark in AMC play. The team also made a run to the AMC Tournament semi-finals with a first round win over Stephens. Mayberry coached Kaylee Clark to an AMC First Team All-Conference selection, and three more Eagles to AMC All-Conference Honorable Mentions. 14 Eagles were named to the AMC Academic All-Conference team, and four were named Daktronics NAIA Scholar-Athletes.
In 2021-22, Mayberry coached the Eagles to fourteen wins. Taylor Freeman was named Honorable Mention NAIA All-American for the second time in her career, and was also named AMC Defensive Player of the Year and AMC All-Conference First Team. WBU also had the AMC Freshman of the Year in Kaylee Clark. WBU placed 11 on the AMC Academic All-Conference list.
The Eagles went 15-6 in the shortened 2020-21 season, highlighted by a win in a triple-overtime thriller against Missouri Baptist. Mayberry was named AMC Coach of the Year, and placed two athletes on the AMC All-Conference First Team. 15 Eagles were named to the AMC Academic All-Conference team as well.
Mayberry coached WBU to 19 wins in its second straight season in 2019-20. Taylor Freeman was named an Honorable Mention NAIA All-American. 10 Eagles were named to the AMC Academic All-Conference team, and one was an NAIA Scholar-Athlete.
In 2018-19, the Eagles won 19 games and finished in a tie for fourth in the AMC. One Eagle earned AMC All-Conference honors, and six were placed on the AMC Academic All-Conference team.
In his first year as head coach, Mayberry led the Eagles to a 13-16 overall record with a 10-14 record in AMC play. Blessing Samuel was named AMC Newcomer of the Year, Ashlyn Ellis was named AMC Freshman of the Year, and seven Eagles were placed on the AMC Academic All-Conference list.
Prior to becoming head coach, Mayberry spent six years as an assistant coach under WBU’s all-time wins leader, Carol Halford. As an assistant, he coached three NAIA All-Americans, 11 AMC All-Conference selections, and 40 AMC Academic All-Conference athletes.
Mayberry also serves as a professor in the Health and Physical Education department at WBU. He is married to Kimberly Mayberry and has two sons named Kobe and Tate. The family resides in Walnut Ridge.
