WBU Comeback Falls Short in Road Opener

LEAVENWORTH, Kan. (11/6/25) – Despite a second-half comeback, the Williams Baptist University women's basketball team dropped its first road game of the season 87-83 against Saint Mary on Thursday night.

Four Lady Eagles finished in double-digit points in the contest.  Cha'Myrean Ellis led the way with 23 points off the bench for WBU on 7-for-13 from the field.  Chelsea Hamilton posted 17 points, Sara Crowe put up 16, and Cortayza Flowers finished with 13 points on the night.

Taylyn Davis led the squad on the glass with 11 rebounds on the night, and Sara Crowe led with four assists.

As a team, WBU went 28-for-60 (46.7 percent) from the field.  The Lady Eagles went 1-for-12 from three-point range, but converted 26 free throws in 32 trips to the charity stripe (81.3 percent).

After Taylyn Davis made the first bucket of the game to put Williams ahead, Saint Mary went on a 17-2 run to take control in the first quarter.  A Chelsea Hamilton triple cut the Spires' lead to 23-15 at the end of the first quarter.

A free throw from Taylor Hooten brought the Lady Eagles within five, but Saint Mary outscored WBU 22-17 in the second quarter to take a 45-32 lead into halftime.

At the end of the third quarter, Sara Crowe capped off a 13-4 run as the Lady Eagles cut the Spire lead to just three.  WBU outscored USM 25-15 in the third to cut down the 14-point lead.

Saint Mary pushed its lead back out to 10 with a three-pointer with just over two minutes to go in the fourth quarter.  In response, WBU rattled off an 8-1 run capped by a layup from Ellis to cut the lead to three once again with 30 seconds to play.  Despite the battle, WBU was unable to overcome the Spires' lead, and the Lady Eagles suffered their first loss of the season.

The loss drops Williams to 2-1 on the season.  The Lady Eagles will return to the floor on the road against William Woods on Saturday, Nov. 8.  Tip-off against the Owls is set for 10 a.m. from Fulton, Mo.
